Networking
Without going into any technical detail and boring you to tears, there are two main types of network. The first is hard wired, this is done using network cable (CAT 5 or higher). The other is wireless, which is completeley self explanitary.
Wired
By far still the most common and reliable. When networking an office or home hard wiring is still the prefered method by most. The main reason for this is security. A hard wired system does not produce a signal that can be compromised by someone with the knowledge, and or, your passwords (like wireless).
It provides a strong and resistent path for your networkable products such as pc's and printers. It can safely share files, internet connections and printing equipment to a large number of people in your home or office.
However wired has a downside, and that is mess. Unless you are installing a network into a new building it almost certainly will require either surface or sunken conduit to carry the cables, aswell as routers, cabinets and sockets all fitted to the area in which the network will operate.
This is evedent especially in peoples homes as this can sometimes not be an option due to expensive redecoration work and in offices where you do not have the landlords permission to cut holes in his walls.
Wireless
Becoming more and more popular due to advances in technology and encryption (WPA WPA2 and WEP encryption). We are installing more and more of this equipment into homes along the Algarve from running simple internet connections, and more recently, home security and cameras that can be operated remotley from any PC in the world.
Wireless advantages are the ease of installation and access. You will not require network (RJ45) sockets on the walls or extensive cabling to support the various appliances you want to run on the network. Although wirless can have difficulties passing through homes built with large amounts of steelwork (which many do have on the Algarve) the system is becoming more suited to homes and small offices.
